First Baptist Church

1875 - Present

It is not known when the first church building was built.  It was a frame construction church and served the congregation until a new church on the corner of W. North and N. Front Streets was completed in the mid 1920's.  The third church building, built of brick in 1936, was at 206 N. Rusk Street.  This is what we use as our chapel now.  In 1957, the present Sanctuary was built next door and connected to the "chapel" building with a covered walkway. The new Sanctuary was dedicated on October 13, 1957 at 2:00 PM.

The church joined the Cherokee Baptist Association on October 9, 1876 and showed a membership of 28.   In 1928, the church was part of the group that formed the Rusk-Panola Baptist Association.  We are still a member of that association.
